Queen Elizabeth National Park

Kasenyi plains are one of the wonderful places on the northeastern side of Queen Elizabeth national park that is often visited by tourists. Kasenyi plans is an open grassland savannah place that is surrounded by the fresh waters of the mighty Kazinga Channel which connects its mouth with Lake George and Lake Edward.

Kasenyi plans is also known as Mweya which harbors plenty of wild animals and birds. The area has a big number of Uganda Kobs because they like hanging out in plain grasslands. The plains harbor about 220 lions and can be seen loitering around the place looking out for what to eat.

The birds in Kasenyi plans have increased hence adding beauty to the place in the park. The sector alone harbors over 300 bird species which is such an amazing venture for birders. The birds include grew-crown cranes, red-throated spurfowls, yellow-throated longclaw, white-tailed lark, shoebills, grew-capped warblers, striped kingfishers, and many more though not mentioned.

Besides the Uganda Kobs and the lions in Kasenyi plans, there are other wild animals that are found in this place which include leopards, hyenas, elephants, buffaloes, warthogs, antelopes, wild pigs, hippos, crocodiles, and many more. Kasenyi plan also harbors rare animals that are only found in Queen Elizabeth national park. These include Sitatunga Antelopes, Kankuranga, Akika, Irangara, and a few others.

Kasenyi plans has an airfield called Kasenyi Airfield that hosts a number of flights for tourists who come to Queen Elizabeth national park on a daily basis. When you use an Aeroplan to come to the park, you shall be delighted to see a few animals around the Airfield which include the elephants, bush pigs, warthogs, and many others.

Activities done in Kasenyi plains

This place offers a few activities but is pretty interesting and rewarding. If you are interested, you can also choose to combine your trip with Queen Elizabeth national park to make your tour a perfect trip to remember Uganda. Activities offered include;

  • Game Viewing

This is where tourists tour around the sector on a four-wheel open-roofed car. It is usually done in the morning, afternoon, evening, and night and they last two to three hours. Game viewing is a rewarding venture where you get to see a number of wild animals and see how they behave in the wild. Game viewing is usually done with the help of a park ranger who is paid to guide you throughout the park/Kasenyi plains.

For birders, this is a perfect place for birding because the place has plenty of beautiful savannah birds which are colorful. Expect to see birds like the red-throated spurfowls, yellow-throated longclaw, white-tailed lark, shoebills, grew-capped warbler, striped kingfisher, and many others that will exit you. Kasenyi plains are one of Uganda’s best birding sites.

  • Boat Cruise

Boating at Kazinga Channel is pretty cool and interesting at the same time because you get to have a close look out for the water birds and the water animals. The boat cruise starts from Mweya Peninsular and lasts for 3 hours on water which takes place in the morning and in the evening on a daily basis.   

How to get there

By Air

Once you decide to go to Kasenyi plains using an Aeroplan, it’s very quick and takes less than 2 hours. The flights are regularly organized from Entebbe International Airport or Kajansi Airfield to Kasenyi airfield which is found in Kasenyi plains.  

By Road

This is the most interesting journey to take in the western part of Uganda. The journey takes 5 to 7 hours to drive from Kampala to Kasenyi plains (Queen Elizabeth national park). You get a number of stopovers to enjoy the beauty of Uganda’s well-built roads and other attractions.

The best time to visit Kasenyi plains

Kasenyi plains (Queen Elizabeth national park) can be at any time of the year according to the activities that you may want to encounter. It is always open for tourists just that it’s better to come for a visit in the dry season in the months of June to August and December to March. The dry season is quite favoring because you get to do all the fun activities in the short vegetation that it is in the rainy season due to the slippery roads.
