Queen Elizabeth National Park

Wildlife in Queen Elizabeth national park : Queen Elizabeth national park is found in the south western region of Uganda and it’s the most visited national park. The park joins with maramagambo forest sharing the border with kyambura game reserve, kigezi game reserve and Kibale national park. Queen Elizabeth national park has an area cover of 1,978 square kilometer and it stretches between lake Edward and George that are connected by kazinga channel to thrill while on Uganda Safaris.

Queen Elizabeth national takes pride in its amazing diversity which includes lakes, savannah grassland, forests and wetlands that are habitats to a variety of wildlife species. The wildlife species can be found in various sectors of the national park and these include;

ISHASHA SECTOR

The ishasha sector is well known for having tree climbing lions due to the support of the candelabra trees that have big branches that lions hang on. Within the sector there are also savannah woodland tree species such as huge fig trees, cactus trees, acacia among others.

Besides the climbing tree lions there also other wildlife species such as leopards, buffaloes, warthogs, waterbucks, Topi and hippopotamus among others. These can be spotted while on game drives and nature walks within the sector.

KAZINGA CHANNEL

The kazinga channel is found in kasese district with an estimated terrain of 914meters above sea-level. It’s a wide and long channel that connects two fresh waters of lake George and Edward. The channel has two parts the north kazinga and the kasenyi plains. The channel is protected and registered through Ramsar sites rights of conservation of wetlands.

The channel is a habitat to a variety of animal species such as crocodiles, hippopotamus, waterbucks, statunga antelopes, buffaloes, elephants as well as bird species. The channel mostly attracts a large number of hippos and crocodiles in the world. These animal species can be spotted while on a boat cruise.

KASENYI PLAINS

The kasenyi plains are located in the north east of queen Elizabeth national park. The plains are so amazing with the enchanting views of the savannah with antelopes such as Uganda kob. The kasenyi plains are well known for having a large number of antelopes, lions as well as other cats within the park. The plains comprise of the kazinga channel where tourists can enjoy the boat cruise.

Wildlife that is found within the plains include elephants, tree climbing lions, antelopes, leopards, kob as well as birds such as grey-crown cranes, yellow throated long crow, red throat spur flow among others. These can be spotted while on a boat cruise and game drives on Uganda wildlife Safaris.

KYAMBURA GORGE

The gorge is known to be the valley of apes within queen Elizabeth national park and is drained by the kyambura river which is 100 metres. The gorge has very amazing views of the rain forest and its positioned close to the equator. The kyambura gorge is known for being a habitat of chimpanzees and its recorded by researchers that there only 16 chimpanzees that are fully habituated within the gorge. The kyambura gorge steeps slopes are amazing as they attract a lot of flamingos as well its sheltered by the riverine forest that attracts a lot of primates within the national park.

Besides the chimpanzee trekking ,  the gorge is also a habitat to other primates such as red tailed monkeys, red colobus monkeys, white colobus monkeys, olive baboons and vervet monkeys, blue monkeys  among others as well as bird species such as blue headed bee eaters, fin foot African bird, white napped pigeons and many more.

MWEYA PENISULAR

The mweya peninsular is a dense grass cover with a lot of vegetation that is monopolized by the  candelabra and thorny bushes. The peninsular has a variety of game drive tracks and it requires a ranger to guide the tourist because its so difficult due to the presence of trees and the small bushes.

But however the tourists can appreciate the kazinga channel lunch cruise that takes 2 hours. Wildlife that can be spotted within the mweya peninsular include leopards that live within the shrubby thickets, warthogs, baboons, elephants, hyenas, buffaloes, lions among others. These are spotted while on game drives within the peninsular as well as guided nature walks.
